What are jaw tumors?
Cysts or tumors sometimes develop in the jaw and facial bones. Most are benign, but they can grow and damage bone and teeth if left alone, and some need wider treatment. Early diagnosis makes treatment far simpler.
Signs that call for an exam
- A slow-growing swelling of the jaw or face.
- Teeth that drift or loosen without cause.
- Persistent numbness of the lip or chin.
- A mouth sore that does not heal within two to three weeks.
Stages of care
It starts with examination, imaging and a biopsy, followed by defining the type and planning surgery. After removal, bone may need rebuilding with grafts or plates to restore jaw shape and chewing, and sometimes dental implants later.
Follow-up
Regular scan check-ups are scheduled because some cysts and tumors can recur, and monitoring catches this early. If you notice any of these signs, do not delay an exam.
