What are jaw-joint problems?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the lower jaw to the skull in front of the ear and works with every bite and word. Problems can cause pain, clicking, locking or headaches.
Common signs
- Pain in front of the ear or in the cheek and jaw muscles.
- Clicking or grinding when opening the mouth.
- Difficulty opening fully, or the jaw deviating to one side.
- Recurrent headaches or ear pain with no clear cause, and grinding teeth at night.
Treatment plan
Care usually starts with an accurate diagnosis, sometimes with imaging or MRI, followed by conservative steps: changing harmful habits, exercises and physiotherapy, suitable medication and a night splint when needed. Injections or arthroscopy are reserved for cases that do not respond.
When to see a doctor
If pain lasts for more than a few weeks, you cannot open or close your mouth, or the jaw locks repeatedly.
