TMJ Arthroscopy

A minimally invasive keyhole procedure to diagnose and treat jaw-joint problems through tiny incisions, with faster recovery.

TMJ Arthroscopy

What is TMJ arthroscopy?

A minimally invasive procedure in which a slim scope, a few millimetres wide, enters the joint through a small opening in front of the ear. The surgeon sees the joint directly and treats it with fine instruments.

What it treats

  • Adhesions inside the joint that limit mouth opening.
  • A displaced joint disc and jaw locking.
  • Chronic joint inflammation that has not responded to conservative care.

How it is done

It is usually performed under general anaesthesia and takes roughly half an hour to an hour. The joint is irrigated, adhesions are released and the disc is repositioned as far as possible.

After the procedure

Most patients return to daily life within days. Regular mouth-opening exercises, which the surgeon will explain in detail, are a key part of success. Mild swelling and temporary numbness around the incision can occur.
