Regular braces move teeth within the bone; they do not change the position of the bone itself. When the problem lies in the jaws, surgery may be needed to reach a healthy bite and better facial balance.
Do I need surgery?
The answer comes after a clinical exam, scans and facial photographs. Indicators include a clearly protruding or receding jaw, difficulty biting, an open bite and noticeable facial asymmetry.
The treatment journey
- Braces before surgery (often 12 to 18 months) to prepare the teeth.
- Surgery: usually through the mouth, with no visible scars.
- Braces after surgery to finalise the bite.
Questions to ask
- What are the non-surgical alternatives and their limits?
- What risks apply to my case specifically?
- How will I eat in the first weeks of recovery?
