These are general awareness tips; the instructions your surgeon gives after your operation are always the first reference.
Swelling
Swelling usually peaks after two to three days and then settles gradually. Cold compresses help in the first two days, as does sleeping with your head raised on two pillows.
Eating
Liquids and soft foods are the basis in the first days: strained soup, yoghurt, scrambled eggs, juices and smooth porridge. Drink enough fluids and avoid hard or very hot foods.
Mouth care
Follow the rinse and soft-brush instructions precisely; oral hygiene lowers the risk of infection.
When to call the surgeon right away
- Bleeding that does not stop with pressure.
- High fever, or pain that grows rather than eases.
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
- Swelling that increases after day four with strong redness.
